Outboard Gearcase Lubes

Just a question for my own knowledge. There are so many different types of lower unit lubes, and I was wondering just what the difference is between them. They all serve the same purpose, to lube the gears, bearings, etc. There are GL 4, GL 5, Type C, just straight 80w-90, and so on. Other than a high horsepower racing motor that may have extreme loads on the bearings and gears, is there any reason that 80w-90 couldn't be used in any gearcase?

Thanks in advance for any info on this question.

Type-C is to be used in OMC electric shift gearcases-----------------Nothing to do with electrical properties of the oil.----------------Just need the right viscosity for them to work / last properly.
