"Judging from your thread title, I'm thinking that you are talking about a drive that has been removed from the boat???? Correct????
If so, it should make no difference what-so-ever. Stand it, or lay it down, but either way.... protect the shaft(s) and the paint the best that you can.
More importantly would be checking the oil prior to any long term storage.
If it were to have any water in it, and if it were to separate from the oil, you will now risk internal gear/bearing rust damage.
I have seen specific location rust on a lower unit "driven gear" from just that...... long term storage/water separated/rust formed in one little area "only"...... (the rest of the gear set/bearings were in near perfect condition!)
This renders a complete gear set worthless!
Question: Assuming that I am correct and it will be stored for a duration....... why are you removing the drive? Just curious!
