Ordering parts with no serial

I have a Mariner 40hp manual start, twin carb, thru-prop exhaust and of course no serial number tag.
The only numbers I can find are on the round tag(C01542).
67604, 67603 #'s on the side of power head itself.
And (6E900).

I've tried matching this up on various websites and cannot figure out if this is a:
[h=1]40B (THRU PROP. EXHAUST) Mariner Outboard M-676-B000106 THRU B002780
40C (TWIN CARB) 6E9-000106 THRU 6E9-007665 (M)
[/h]And of course the impellers are different part numbers between the two models, so that makes it more difficult.
Any help or knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Aaron

I looked at the round stamp again today and it actually reads 001542.
That has now helped me to figure out one of two things about the engine:

1: Its a 40 M 676B-000431 - 676B-001775 1978.
or
2: Its a 40 M 6E9-001201 - 1982.

The best i can help you with is if your engine serial number really is 00001542, then it should be a MARINER 40 M model number 7040202 and this engine was first registered back on 07/06/1981 through mercury marine. Good luck.:)

For engine parts try googling model number 7040202.

Where is this round tag? There should be a rectangular tag on the mount bracket. If it has a 6E9 case, I'd think it's closer to the '82 model. Can't be sure without numbers, though.

The round tag is on the side of the powerhead.
There is no rectangular stamp with the serial on this engine.

The part that was throwing me a curveball was that I noticed the (6E900) on the opposite side of the powerhead. In addition, I noticed the (67603)&(67604) on the powerhead in various locations as well.
I also noticed the (6E9) on both carbs too.
