Optimax Broken Rod

Long story as short as possible.98' Opti 150hp Has never been "right".It kept scoring the #4 cylinder until I found oil line check valve installed backward,so no oil to that cylinder.Thought I found the culprit. I completely rebuilt over the winter and its ran great until now. Temp gauge was normal. At about 75% throttle the engine quit & I found #1 piston rod broken and through the crank cover. No good. I did use a USED piston/rod/bearing for the #1 cylinder. The original piston had some pitting I thought was from carbon build-up. Anyway, the piston I bought and used had a bluish color on the rod from previous heat.In hindsight that was a stupid decision, but hindsight is 20/20.My question is: is that enough reason to try to rebuild again? I need a 100% reason for failure before I put any more money into this motor.Any thoughts/ideas/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Cheaper to find another motor.---------High tech motors have too many gadgets that can go wrong.---------Great when they run , but hard / expensive to repair.

Thanks, thats what I'm thinking but I HATE to give up on something.I bought this Opti because I had a great experience with a 99' model on another boat.It ran awesome for three summers while I had it.A friend of mine has an 02' or 03' Ficht he has decided not to use that I can buy very reasonably. Its the Bombardier motor and not the OMC.I haven't found alot of bad press on those models.Any thoughts? Thanks again,Scott

Agree, time for another. The early opti's in this class also had chronic overheat problems. Since it's a 98 model that makes it 14 years old - so you got about 2 years past it's "best before" date.

Say "thank-you" to the motor and lay her to rest...
