"I just had 1 of 2 engines to local merc dealer for inspection as to why running rough after motor/boat has been in storage for 2 years.I am being told i need a rebuild due to failure in cylinder. It has no compression and showing metal in cyl.Motor ran great before put up for storage, dealer sees no operator error or neglect,in fact he raves how clean motors look inside and out.He can not pinpoint reason for failure? I think Mercury should be replacing?Unit has 450hrs total run time in 7 years? Has anyone else had this issue and what was results?"

At a guess id say you have los

At a guess id say you have lost a locator pin in a piston. You will need a set of top pinned pistons. It is one of the most common reasons for a blow up on these motors.

Good luck getting anything aft

Good luck getting anything after 7 years. Unless the president of the company is a close bud. Or you know something about him he doesn't want anyone else to know! lol

"Thanks for the responses,i wi

"Thanks for the responses,i will let you know once positive result of failure is determined."

"#4 cylinder has no compressio

"#4 cylinder has no compression, all other cylinders have 110 plus, the scarring is not even big enough to put my fingernail in and no visible reason for failure? Cyl head is clean as can be with not a scratch and very little carbonbuild?Merc.will do nothing? Although units are almost 7 years old they ONLY have 400hrs and was in storage for 2 years Merc does not even want to discuss any help, what a punch in the gut and eyeopener about there customer service? Then to find out that my other part of the twin still had rev.2 black w/blue dot d.inj and merc wont help there either REALLY sent me to the sky?Anyone with 6 like new blue d.injectors for sale? Let me know."

With 0 compression I would exp

With 0 compression I would expect the problem to be fairly obvious. Seems strange your not seeing it with the head off.

"Hey Bob , Many didnt get 400

"Hey Bob , Many didnt get 400 hrs .My first one did 77hrs ,Im not surprised from mercs response though after 7 years, most manufacturers would be the same .Have you checked the piston rings ?"

"Dave,piston rings did not loo

"Dave, piston rings did not look to be the cause,as if they came apart or something. The only possible logic is that either water in the oil and it had a dry start after sitting for awhile or fuel? The thing that bothers me the most is no one at Merc wants to look past the years and see the low hours and even offer partial help? I was told by a person that supposedly is from the office of the president that i would have to start legal proceddings to get anywhere? Is that some s--t or what !!!"

Unfortunately not all engines

Unfortunately not all engines go 2000 hrs and then gracefully get retired. 2 strokes for all the up sides do have a common problem that crosses all lines. When they loose oil lubrication or get hot they tend to blow up shortly after. I would say fuel injected 2 strokes more so than carborated. 4 strokes while not perfect don't blow up as easily as the crankcase full of oil prevents a totaly dry cylinder condition. Can you imagine if our Fords and Chevys gernaded like 2 stroke outboards often do.

If i would have got 1000 hrs i

If i would have got 1000 hrs i would have been a heck of a lot happier. The saddest part is that the motors were always well taken care of and the problem was not facilitated by something me or anyone else for that matter in the same posistion could have avoided.I agree with your common problems scenarios across the board. This one has been just hard to swallow for me.

"I hear what you are saying Bo

"I hear what you are saying Bob, but have to tell you my experience is - I work on alot more motors that have been "under-used" than ones that are run all the time.

Outboards don't like to sit around, sometimes for months on end and then get taken out on the occasional weekend and have the snot run out of them.

I'm not saying that's what you did, but I work on far more motors that have less than 200 hours on them than those with over 1000 hours of similar vintage.

A sure fire way to kill an outboard is either neglect it's maintenance or "not run it often enough" - do both and it's dead for sure..."

"Graham, very true. Depending

"Graham, very true. Depending on where the motor sits not being used or even fired up on a hose once in awhile to keep all the moving parts and cylinders coated with oil, rust doesn't take long to form. Surface rust on the cylinder walls and rings can shorten the life. Florida is nice and warm but very humid as well. The Florida climate is hard on boats...we see lots of them imported into our area...rotten stringers ot transoms on 6 or 7 year old Grady's isn't uncommon."

"all good stuff.Neglect of mai

"all good stuff.Neglect of maint. certainly was not my case but i am guilty of not running it enough, however these are twins and to have only one cyl in one motor do this? The cyl walls and heads and all other parts had not one speck of rust or anything resembling age from sitting? The other motor comp was 110/115 all around and besides the weak d.injectors that should have been replaced in 1 of the 3 100hr services is ok."
