Optimax 225 compressor problems

"I have twin 225 optimax engin

"I have twin 225 optimax engines, 2002, with less than 500 hours of use. One engine is missing at rpms above 33-3500, consistently. The other engine had the same problem once for a few seconds. There is "belt dust" under the cowl and engine covers. The scatter pattern clearly suggests the dust is being thrown off the compressor pulley. Does anyone recognize this as a typical symptom of compressor failure? Could this be a symptom of blocked injectors? Any experts out there?"

"Michael, before you start looking at the "hard stuff", start with an easy question.

How old are the spark plugs? if they are more than 50 hours old, they are old and could be severely shot. Opti's EAT plugs and a bad plug can mimic countless problems."

"Thanks Graham, but the plugs are almost brand new. They wouldn't account for the heavy amount of rubber dust that is being thrown off the compressor pulley. This finding is brand new and significant. It has never happened since I owned these engines, and I am the original owner.It was even thrown out from under the flywheel cover and compressor breather and is all over the inside of the engine cowl. The belt is obviously being eaten up by a pulley that is not turning at times. The idler is not bad (the wear is on the inside of the belt) and the alternator was just replaced. I also don't think the idler pulley or alternator would fail in a very reproducible and finite RPM range. I will double check the plugs if you think plug failure would cause the belt to be abraided."
 
Abraided belt's are a sign

Abraided belt's are a sign of a bad compressor because of the run out (true) of the pulley's. Merc knows about the problem and has taking care of those unit's in warrenty. That is is common problem.
