I posted a question yesterday

I posted a question yesterday about a 1975 85hp evinrude. I bought the boat three days ago took it out did fine. then yesterday at a little under half throttle it went dead and now i have no spark. I had first thought it was the powerpack because i still didnt get any fire after removing the kill wire from the pack. Powerpack right? Well today i looked at it a little closer and found two sprk plug wires that had bare spots on them from rubbing the motor and the stator has green goo dripping off of it. The guy i bought it from said he had not had any work done on it but the stator looks new. its nice clean and bright green. So my question is would the powerpack cause the stator to overheat or would a faulty stator cause the powerpack to go out. Does the goo dripping from the stator mean it needs to be replaced? measured resistance between brown and brown/yellow and it was 800 ohm. Will i need to replace everything. Any input will be helpful.
thanks

The "goo" indicates th

The "goo" indicates that the stator has overheated. Usually this happens on that model due to the rectifier failing which causes the voltage to back up at the stator.

Bottom line.... replace the stator and check the rectifier portion of the charging system.

"The stator provides approxima

"The stator provides approximately 300v AC to the powerpack capacitor which is needed to energize the powerpack. When the ignition coils within the stator start to melt down, there is a voltage drop to the powerpack which cause the powerpack not to energize.

Replacing the stator may result in perfect spark and is the starting point of repairs. Your powerpack may be as good as new and is simply not functioning due to the low output voltage of the stator.

Note: It would have been better to stick with the original post rather than start a new one."

I have a 70's model 25 hp

I have a 70's model 25 hp Evinrude o/b. It worked fine for two trips out on the lake. Two weeks ago the motor would not start. After getting it home I pulled both plugs because it seamed like there was no spark. I could see spark in the bottom plug but not the top one. I replaced the plugs and it still would not start. Then I had spark in both plugs. does anyone know what I should be looking for. It sounds like I have no spark.. Thanks in advance.
