"I recently received a pontoon boat as trade-out for some work. The motor is a Mariner 40 hp remote long shaft w/ electric start. Model # 40ELTO, serial # 6E9 L 501796. Motor and trim / tilt seem okay but oil injection has been disconnected. Is this a keeper and if so, what year. License says 1990 but the guy I got it from seemed unsure."

"Alan, believe that is an 86 model by the serial. The oil injection system on that originally was a system called "auto-blend" and whoever removed it did that motor a favour. Auto-blend killed more motors due to malfunction than any other single cause.

That is a Mariner built by Yamaha for Mercury. Exceptionally well build/designed motor and the 40 was very popular. I would definately keep it..."
