"Well I took out the boat I just bought. Started up good I went to go put it in gear and it jumped a few times then went into gear, So I idled out to open water and started to press the throttle, The Bow went way up Rpms were up but I bow was still high, high enough to where I couldnt see over it, Then it finally leveled out after like 20 seconds and I got going but still didnt seem right. It almost seems like when i put it in gear it has to much throttle for Idling speed. And When I get going It seems like I have to give it more then half throttle to get going anywhere and to level out. Seems like the lower unit to me but I dont know?"

"After a little futher examination, The boat is out of the water and on the trailer, and I put it in gear, with the motor off and Tried to turn the prop, Well it was tight, then I was able to turn it, then it was tight again if you know what I mean.. So I am thinking my lower gears are gone?"

"Mark, sounds like your prop hub is slipping - take it to a prop shop and have it rehubbed - usually runs between 35 and 50 bucks depending on the prop...

The hub itself is surrounded by a rubber sleeve which is pressed into the prop. It's function is to slip if you hit something hard - it will give instead of chewing your gears or snapping a driveshaft.

Hubs do deteriorate - it sounds like your is "losing it's grip" holding one time and slipping another.

If you have a spare prop, swap it out and retest the boat..."

"Thanks Graham, Well that sounds a lot better then it being the whole lower unit. I dont have a spare prop, I am not that rich, they get pricey. I know you have seen the boat but how sure are you that it would be a the hub? I know its hard for you to answer that, but just curious."

"hey mark, when you take the prop off check the mating surface where the prop goes against the lower unit,if the prop is bad most times you can see the metal is shiny like it was scratched or polished.when the prop is good every thing spins together, any sign of something rubbing together is a good sign of a slipping prop.if you take the prop to a shop, most can take a quick look and tell you, without charge."

"Thanks I will have to check it out, I did notice that the prob is a little loose, Not much. I have to find my a wrench that is big enough to take it off, Any tips when it comes to taking it off? I have never taken one off."

"no its simple, you of course h

"no its simple, you of course have the nut, sometimes there is a weird looking metal thing with tabs you have to bend up the tabs in order to loosen the nut,if its there youll know what i mean.do not spin the prop backwards, you could bend the rubbers on you water pump backwads, and when you start up,it could rip or shred.other than that the prop will slide right off."

"Thanks man, you have been a g

"Thanks man, you have been a great help so far, so what direction do I turn the nut? And do I just hold the prop while holding the nut?"

Mark the hub and mark the oute

Mark the hub and mark the outer part of the prop.Run the boat at full throttle. Check the marks and if they are no longer in line the hub is slipping.

"you should be able to hold th

"you should be able to hold the prop while loosening the nut,it would loosen counter clockwise and really not be cranked on there."

"Well I took it to the local boat shop today, He came out and looked a it and I told him what I knew, he turned the prop while engine was off and he said it was my lower unit not staying in forward gear. Its a really redneck boat shop but its only one within 75 miles of me... I am in the country. The question is, is he correct or could it still by my prop or my hub??"
