One more ? for the 1975 9.9 Evinrude

OK doing the water pump now.
The driveshaft o-ring?
It was there, but was all the way down, at the top of the water pump housing.
There is no groove at the top of the driveshaft for an o-ring, even though the factory manual shows a groove mid splines.
Where should it go if at all?

Obviously the motor has a newer driveshaft / lower unit installed.-----The later models used a seal at the powerhead and not an o-ring on the driveshaft.

OK, so just some grease is all I can do then correct?
