"I bought a 1970 18ft v hull boat with an omc 4 cylinder engine, the interior was stripped out as far as I can tell all of the wires and cables for the engine are still hooked up. When I try to start the engine it will turn over good and it acts like it wants to start but won't. I have primed the engine with gas and it gets to the point of almost running but when I let go of the key it quits. Anyone know why it does this? This is my first inboard engine that I have ever had. Any help would be greatly appreciated."

"Take a meter and check the + post of the coil for voltage with the key turned to on, use the neg battery post or engine for ground, if no voltage then you have to trace it back to see where it's missing."

"Thanks Bob,
I checked the voltage to the coil and it wasn't getting any. I started checking the wires and found a lot of them were very old and cracking so I replaced them with new ones. I am still not getting any volts to coil. I was wondering if the coil might be bad? Do you have any suggestions?"

Mike...I don't have a wiring diagram that goes back that far so try and get yourself a manual. I'm not sure if OMC used a resistor wire back then or even possibly an external ballast resistor or a coil with a built in? But using a meter you could check the "ON" position of the ignition switch, could be a purple wire and see if you have 12v with the switch on. If you do then you need to follow that until you fine the problem."

Sorry about the thing with the diet coke(lol). I went back and thought about that for a sec. I ran a jumper wire from the battery to the solenoid on the starter (that is where the wire from the coil is running to). I tested the volts on the coil then and had juice to it. So I primed the carbs. and it started and ran for about 10 seconds. It acts like now it is not getting enough gas to keep it running. When I get it running and give it gas it starts to cut out and backfires.

"Sounds like you have at least 2 problems, the original won't run and a fuel prob. Could be old bad gas? clogged filters, anti syphon valve, fuel pump, gummed up carb, stuck float....."
