OMC Wires to Stern Drive

I have a 1988 OMC Cobra II wit

I have a 1988 OMC Cobra II with 5.o Liter Chev. Just rebuilt the engine. There is a pair of wires going directly into the top of the stern drive. The wires pulled from the plug and I am not sure which is which. Does the direction matter? What are these wires for? A limit switch? I would appreciate any help.

Paul....the only wires back th

Paul....the only wires back there is a pair that are for the trim sender which is just a variable resistor. There is no polarity for them so it doesn't matter about mixing them up.
