Depends on type of drive and year. Some older OMC units that have an electric shift take a certain type of oil.

1976 800 stringer. Should I use Type C in the upper unit too? This is a reconditioned unit with less than 50 hours on it but 5yrs old. Is there anything other than a weak/broken seal that will cause oil level to go down? Any idea how much it will cost for a pressure test? I love this boat but it has been a royal pain!
Thanks

"1976 is electric shift. 800 series began in 1978. for a 1976 electric shift, you must use type C in the lower for sure, and you can use type C in the upper if you want, or just any 80W90 marine gear lube..Canadian Tire has the Type C I noticed the other day. One common cause of leaking upper is improper shimming when assembling the top cover of the exhaust housing. the upper should only move up and down .030" or so. the manual shows how to shim. A lot of people recondition these uppers but don't change the steering shaft seal. If you have tru course steering that's something to keep in mind."

Thanks Hy.
Upper was replaced

Thanks Hy.
Upper was replaced in situ by Goreskis in Ontario. They do hundreds so I'm assuming they re-instaled correctly. I've had way too many problems with this engine and out drive and have had two different marine mechanics looking at it and I dont trust either anymore. Shame eh.
