OMC trim cylinder seals

I have a 1982 sea swirl boat with a v-6 Buick engine. This omc unit comes with trim cylinders on each side of the motor. They work as long as I keep oil in them, as they both leak around the cylinder rod seals. I have complete rebuild kits for these cylinders and actually disassembled one on the bench. Quad rings etc were no problem but for the life of me, I can't figure out how to remove and replace the rod wiper seals. I can't see any way to remove them. Do I have to buy new end housings with the seals in them? Any help would be appreciated.

you can either:
1. take the snap ring off that holds the piston on- with the piston off you can slide the rod through
or
2. take the bottom rubber mount off. They even gave you a hex on the end of the rod (3/8" or so) to hold the rod while turning the mount nut- or just hit it with a 1/2" impact- it'll usually loosen before the rod tries to spin). With the mount and nut off, that end will slide through

I'm trying to remember if there is a seal on the inside of the piston that seals it to the rod. I don't think so, but I would probably use method 1. just to check that

p.s. your engine is a Chevy 229 V6 , OMC quit using Buick engines in 1972

I understand how to get the rod and piston off, however it is the rod seal in the bottom casting I am inquiring about. It looks like the casting itself is molded around the seal itself making it impossible to get out and change.

nah- you just grab it with a seal pick and it pops out of it's recess. it's not a steel backed seal or anything. It's just nylon. pull.

I will try that. Getting the cylinder apart itself is not too hard. I just didn't want to completely remove the seal damaging it so bad that it was than it was originally which was usable but leaked oil into the bilge. Thanks. i have the seals already including the backing rings. The OEM manual doesn't explain anything but does give a parts blow up.

:)
Parker has been using those wipers for decades, and they're about $2, but of course from BRP they're 10.

But you don't want trim fluid leaking on your boat's stringers - it can turn the wood to mush.

My OEM manual shows the complete disassembly and assembly. 1983 manual covering all engine models.
