if you used the same prop that you drilled and pinned it is prob out of balance if you didnt have this vibration untill you took the lower end off chances are its something you did are didnt do[shims in right place washer in right place, thrust bearing in right place, if you pulled the complete drive did you mark your ball gears for reassemby alot can go wrong if you forget 1 thing, keep us posted

I just took the lower unit off and left the upper in the down position with the ball gears locked in. I put all the washers and the thrust bearing back as they came out. There were no shims on the prop shaft, but seems to be no forward/backward play. I'm going to take the 3 bolts out of the prop and try it and see what happens. I've been only running the boat at 500/600 rpms with little vibration. We came back in to reload on booze, food and water and we are going back out. I'll keep you posted.
Cheers, Glenn

well i am still idling around a little bit and nothing has changed and i have not received the prop yet. I was wondering when you sent it irishwoodsman? If i knew the date it was shipped or a waybill # i could track it from my end.

Cheers to all

OMC Upper Gear Case 382160 185-210HP.jpgHello, this is my first time posting anything, but have read many of the forum comments, and I thought I would jump into this dialogue as it is within the area of my particular problem. I have a 1968 OMC Lower unit, the only numbers are those in the photo, 382160 185 - 210 hp - it is an electric shift and I need to rebuild it, I need a water pump, case, seals and bearings to rebuild the upper gear case. I recently picked up, on e-bay, a 1965 Lower Unit, but, as they say, "buyer beware" it too had the same problems as my original unit. So now I'm out the $350 bucks for the purchased unit, and still dead in the water. So, I hope you all can point me in the right direction, link, website, where I might find parts for my original unit. Thanks so much

Welcome aboard !

This is coming from my heart, please don't take this the wrong way. Get rid of that boat now before you spend another dime on it.

Bet your not going to take my advice. You just love that hull huh ?

Search around find a bad hull boat with a bad motor but good drive merc or volvo. A donor boat the drive needs to be setup for a v8. You need everything back of the flywheel including the flywheel and coupler.

Cut the transom from the donor and install the hole into the hole you cut into your boat transom. And install the new components onto your boat.

Now when your finished you will still have a pos but at least a modern drive that you can buy parts for.

I have a free boat that cost me over 3500 dollars and a entire winter to put together countless hours spent. Now i have a 86' stringer that i cant sell cause who is going to buy it.

Thanks for the comment Master Mechanic.

I have a $1100 boat with the same drive and same problem.

The boat needs a lot of work but the motor runs great, I was going to try and fix it but after your comment I will probably just sell it. I would rather spend the money on a nicer/newer boat and spend more time on the water and less time working on it.

I will try the prop idea maybe that's it... but I'm not going to tear into the out drive.
