Old Geezer going to replace steering cable on a low profile ski boat. Purchased this boat while working runs great but one steering of the cables has a hole 1/2 the way through. Found this while doing some rewiring and clean up of engine. Before Kaiser gave the Frankenstine body I had no problem jumping in doing anything, with a manual by my side. Now I do have difficulty in tight areas, what isn't on a 19 1/2 ft. boat w/two rear tanks and 307 Chevy. Now two questions, first is specialty tools required second is what is the avoidable mistakes that comes from experience? Yes, I know don't start in the first place. My goal is to be pulled at least one more time skiing the Sacramento River behind my boat, using my 800.00 dollar ski purchased 4 yrs. ago before surgeries. Any information on what to avoid or don't be a dumb ass and removing that. Thanks for any assistance Frankenstine II

I am no expert on this, but I can tell you that anyone looking at this is going to need way more data in order to help you out. No idea what this hole is.

I assume you are dealing with the Tru-Course steering "siamese" style cable.
1st problem is sourcing one. You'll need to know the length. Are there any numbers on the cable housing?
2nd step is remove the drive because you will need to pull the shaft out the back to free the drum from the intermediate housing.
3rd is reassembly.

Thanks for the input. Yes, it's a Tru-Course steering and I've already purchased cable I need to do the job. I apologize for the delay in response, I had gout for the first time and don't want it again. So now I'll make sure I have all the tools required along with gaskets, any additional parts to change while apart and room for removal. Right now I'll double check the manual for any special tools while getting everything ready for this surgery. I'll post some pics as I go. Thanks again Frankenstine II
PS the hole I'm referring to is one that someone drilled into the outer jacket and into the cable about 1/2 way through on one of the two cables.

Without seeing your boat design & access to starboard side of the intermediate housing inside the boat, you may find it easier to remove the rubber boot & work thru the hole.

I wouldnt be surprised if some builders installed the cable to the intermediate & fished it forward as the engine was installed.
