i believe the shift switch in

i believe the shift switch in my side mount shift box is shot. the boat is an electric stringer and it will not kick into forward or reverse with the throttle arm. i bypassed the switch and exposed the forward and reverse wires and then used an alligator clip (to the battery) to get it to go forward and reverse.

question 1 - can the switch inside the box be fixed without having to be replaced?
question 2 - does anyone know where i can get one that isn't $500 dollars
question 3 - what about replacing the whole side mount shift box? i've looked for the kind that i have all over the place and i can't find one. there are "generic" side mount shift boxes that are available for about $150 - will these work with my setup or should i just replace the switch in my old box?

any good old-part websites?
any help greatly appreciated
