"I have replaced the 5.7 OMC engine in my 1988 Bayliner 2556 command bridge with a Volvo penta 5.7 GSI which is coupled to the original OMC outdrive. The conversion appears to work ok except for the shift assist module. This worked on the old engine but will not work on the new unit. I have checked the wiring connections, all appears good, however when I operate the module activation switch the engine does not falter and the gear selector will not shift into neutral with the engine running. I am thinking of installing a 12vdc pulse timer activated by the shift switch with the internal relay contacts pulsing the coil wire to earth. Will this work?.

Any idea's would be welcome."

Does the new engine (Volvo

Does the new engine (Volvo) have an electronic ignition? People who installed electronic ignitions on their OMC's (Pertronix) also had to install a modification to the wiring (a couple of diodes and resistors) to allow the ESA module to work. Another option is to replace the ESA with an updated one from CDI/Rapair which will work electronic igintions. (this is still assuming the Volvo has electronic ignition)

I have hard of some guys throwing out their ESA module and just wiring the interrupt switch directly to the negative side of the coil (similar to Mercruiser) the down side of this is if you shift fairly quickly you can stall the engine because you grounding out the coil totally instead of pulsing it like the ESA does.

"Hi Bob thanks for your reply.

"Hi Bob thanks for your reply. Yes the Volvo engine does have electronic ignition (as did the original OMC engine). Will order a new ESA, may also try the pulse timer along with a resistor."

OK Garry so the OMC engine eit

OK Garry so the OMC engine either had the diode fix or a newer ESA.

ps...in my first post I meant to say " the down side of this is if you DON'T shift fairly quickly you can stall the engine because you grounding out the coil totally instead of pulsing it like the ESA does".

"I JUST BOUGHT A 1988 FOUR WINNS 245 VISTA WITH A OMC COBRA, THIS IS MY FIRST OMC AND THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD NO MANUALS WHICH I INTEND TO GET, WOULD SOME ONE TELL ME IF THERE IS MORE THAN ONE GREASE ZIRK ON THE OUTDRIVE AS THAT IS ALL I CAN SEE AND DOES THIS DRIVE HAVE A U-JOINT AND IF SO IS THIS GREASED FROM THE EXTERIOR WHERE THE ONE FITTING IS LOCATED"

There is only one external gre

There is only one external grease zirk about the middle on the stbd side of the transom mount. This greases the gimbal bearing. There are 2 u-joints on the drive shaft however (assuming they have zirks) you have no access to them until you remove the drive itself.

"BOB, THANK YOU FOR THE INFORM

"BOB, THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION,I DID FIND OUT THAT I HAVE THE REPLACEMENT TRANSOM SHIFT CABLE AND THAT IS A PLUS FROM WHAT I HAVE READ ABOUT OMC, MY NEXT JOB, ONCE WE GET IN THE WATER WILL BE TO INSTALL A ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM, MY WIFE AND I ARE NOW IN THE LATE 70'S SO THIS WILL BE THE LAST SHOT, THANK YOU AGAIN"
