omc cobra stuck in forward gear

I have a cone clutch style cobra and I can't get the top gear to lift and disengage so it will go into neutral, any ideas on what could be wrong?

Welcome aboard !

Lower shift cable. Remove the lower cable from the shift bracket actually called the shift converter for omc's and see if you can shift the cable by hand if not corrosion on the outside of the transom in the bell housing might be the problem. If so a new cable is the ticket and is available.

the cone clutch might have slipped so much it friction welded itself together. How did the gear lube look? did it get progressively worse? or was it stuck in gear after a long cruise?
