I was out on my 84 starcraft with a 3.0 omc cobra
after driving for about 15min the engine started to click when I lifted the engine cover the engine was very hot and the engine ran on for about 20 seconds after I turned it off. after i shut it down I let is sit over night and it ran great the next day. any idea what may have caused the overheating?

"First of all, are you sure it's a Cobra as they didn't come out until 1986? There could have been many things that cause the overheating but if it happened one day and not the next then maybe the same thing happened to you that happened to me about 10 yrs ago. Was going up a channel (boat has twin Cobra's) and all of a sudden the temp gauge just climbed to the right side. I immediately turned the stbd engine off and went to lift the engine covers and I noticed a plastic bag floating in the water behind me. Didn't think much of it at the time but later on figured that it must have gotten wrapped around the bottom of the drive and the suction of the pump kept it there until I shut the engine off and then it must have floated off, once it cooled off I started it up and everything was fine, I didn't even toast the impeller."

"If you mean the raw water pump in the outdrive, I would remove the input hose to the t-stat (when engine is cold) and see what kind of water flow you have, if you get at least a 2 to 4 inch head then you are still pumping lots of water."
