"Benny....I think it's time for you to get a manual that will answer all those questions. Here is a link to a genuine OMC 1989 factory manual on ebay.

ps...the hose from the flywheel area is just a drain hose that goes into the bilge sometimes tied off near the starter with a plastic cable tie and usually is cut on an angle.

This is from my Clymers manual

This is from my Clymers manual

plugs .030
points .018
dwell 29 +- 2
timing 10 deg BTDC
idle speed 550-600

Setting the points with a feeler guage is ok to start but try to use a dwell meter for the final setting and then check/adjust the timing.

"Bob,
Anywhere you check toda

"Bob,
Anywhere you check today it says recommended plug gap to be .035 due to gas formulation changes. The .030 was original spec with MR43t as plug which do not show up as a current application. Every year I wrongly kept replacing plugs with original replacements. I switched to current recommended high end NGK's and better performance/mileage resulted.
Benny, how come you have two threads on same problem going?"

"Your right Glenn but sometime

"Your right Glenn but sometimes not knowing where the person is or what plug they are using I'll usually quote the manual to be on the safe side, normally if someone has the internet savvy to post on here then they should be able to find that kind of info on the web also."

"Glenn thanks for ur post ,i

"Glenn thanks for ur post ,i dont know how i have 2 post its a mistake (sorry) Glenn how do you like ur 5.8 are they good engines? and were do i find the good coil because i order one from marine engine and its is same like from NAPA , are they good coil?"

"Bob, I consider myself kind o

"Bob, I consider myself kind of savvy on a lot of topics. But, went 17 years before discovering plugs and gap were wrong. Just never thought of the possibility they could have changed, due to gas formulation changes, when original OEM called for ones were still available."

"I have a problem with my omc

"I have a problem with my omc cobra 1989 5.8 i/o. the alternator doesnt charge the batteries. I took it in to be tested and it is good. one of the leads that goes to it doesnt have power to it so I followed it to an item called a shift assist module.if this component is bad, will that cause the alternator to discontinue charging the system?any help would be greatly appreciated."

"Really should start a new thr

"Really should start a new thread for this problem instead of tagging on to an old one.

How do you know the alt is not charging? Does the dash have a voltmeter and does it move up if you rev the engine in neutral? The big orange wire coming off the B terminal is the one that does the charging. The purple wire you are taking about comes off the alt and goes into a splice, from there the purple wire continues on to feed the ESA but another part of the splice turns into a red/purple wire which is your resistor wire that feeds the positive post of the coil (unless it has been converted to electronic ignition?), if the resistor wire didn't have any power to it the engine would not even run."
