At the lake Sunday pulling boat out of water. Outdrive will not go up. Tilt motor is working ,but spur gear is just turning freely. What broke something in the clutch pack?

Thank you guys!

So you have a stringer out drive that won't tilt up, or it tilts up very slowly, or you need to help it up physically. Maybe it doesn't move at all.

Here is a step bye step guide to fixing it. A manual would be very helpful.

1- A fully charged battery is imperative.

2- Disconnect the battery and clean the battery posts. Are the cables good?

3- With the battery disconnected, clean all the connections on the port side, solenoids. Don't forget the grounds.

4- Clean connections to tilt motor. Two wires.

5- Connect the battery.

6- On the out drive port side, there is a clutch housing. Four screws hold on
cover. Pull that cover. May be full of water. They all leak.

Two things you can do at this time.

A- Clean out the housing with clutch installed.

B- Remove the clutch and rebuild the housing. New seals.

If you chose A, Spray the clutch with brake cleaner. Make sure it's as clean as you can get it. You might have to spray it a few times. Blow it dry. Spray the the clutch with penetrating oil. Pack the housing with grease, and install cover. Don't over tighten the screws, can bind the clutch.

If you chose B, remove all the components of the gear housing. Soak everything in Acetone overnight. Rebuild housing, new seals. Blow dry the parts, soak them all in motor oil for a hour or two. Install parts. Pack the housing with grease. I know it calls for 30 weight motor oil. Trust me pack it with grease. Install cover.

7- Gently pry off the rubber bumpers. Don't mix them up, pump grease in the zerks. Install bumpers.

At this point the drive should move up and down easy. If it doesn't, you need to pull the tilt motor. Test motor and replace or rebuild. Make sure the hammer blow coupler is good or replace. Don't forget the gasket, on the tilt motor. .

Good luck!

The tilt was working good. The tilt motor is working it has power. Just the spur gear that runs on the half moon is not turning when I hit the button. So I can pick up the drive and move up and down freely. I took off the half moon and I can grab the spur gear and it just turns freely. So I'm thinking something broke. I had the boat at house, but already got a parking ticket on it. Gotta love the HOA. Boat storage is at the the lake 30 mins away.

Thanks Alan

I'll to look into it more this weekend.

ok take off the half moon gear and tie up the drive so it's out of the way. Take off the cover, take off the c clip that hold on the little gear that moves the half moon gear. Remove the little gear.

Remove the guts of the housing, it full of water? Anyway remove the triangle cover on the very front that holds the worm gear end.

Remove the worm gear. Now have someone hit the tilt switch and peer in there see if the hammerblow coupler is moving.

If you see all is moving ok i have seen people freeze the clutch pack bye drilling thru them and placing a bolt thru them.

I don't recommend that, there is a few clutch packs on ebay right now.

So understand i posted in this open forum that i don't recommend that, what you do is your business, the clutch pack is there in case your going along and hit a object the drive is supposed to slip on the clutch pack and move up.

My tilt did not work earlier this summer. I checked and cleaned all connections that were located around the engine itself and still no go. Then I focused on wiring coming from the tilt switch at the controls and still no go. Then I crawled up under my dash and spent some time under there. I found a male/female plug that at the time I wasn't sure if it even had anything to do with the tilt system. I unplugged it to look for corrosion and it looked good. I reconnected it and then tried the tilt switch and it worked! I never found this plug in the wiring diagram nor mentioned anywhere when researching my tilt problem at that time. Bottom line is I thought my problem was mechanical then when it was simply reconnecting an electrical connection that got my tilt working again.
