"Need help. I was Idling along in gear with my 1989 5.7 omc stern drive. It went dead. I tried to restart it and the engine would not turn over. you could hear the starter clicking but would not turn engine. All manifolds and risers are less than a year old. Thought it might have ingested water so I pulled all of my plugs to check the engine and w/o the plugs it still would not turn over. I tried to turn it over with a long ratchet on the crank shaft and it wouldnt budge. Oil pressure and temp were good when it quit running. Recent oil change, and recent stern drive water pump. I was told that it may be the outdrive that is locked up and not the engine. Prop spins freely in nuetral and no grinding or other noises. Of course would not turn in gear. Any thoughts of what it might be and how to check it? Only way I know of checking my out drive is to pull it to see if that is it."

I'm afraid that's the only way to quickly narrow it down between drive and engine is to pull the drive and see...good luck!

"Thanks Bob, I am afraid you are right. I started on it and just have the six nuts to pull off and snatch it out. Either way it is time for a service, just not looking forward the type of service it may need. I will know saturday for sure."

I had the exact same deal with mine. I found it to be frozen carrier bearing due to oil and/or failed bellows. Good luck. I have mine apart right now and looking at about 1500 to get it back togther.

"I pulled my outdrive off and it appears to be fine. But the engine still will not spin over, even with out the plugs in it. I cant even get it to budge by trying to turn the balancer bolt. So I guess it is engine time. Its just strange that the oil pressure and temp was good and I was just idleing at the time it quit. It may have ingested salt water in one or more of the cylinders and have the rings siezed to the cylinders, or dropped or bent a valve, or even bent a rod. I havent been able to flush the saltwater out of the cooling system and engine since it is not running. I will have to pull it out an tear it down to find out I guess. Fun fun fun."
