Hello all,
I was out on the lake and al of a sudden my engine iced into an High RPS and I stopped moving. It appears that something in the stern dive (OMC 40 Model: 981871) went and wasn't putting a load n the engine anymore. I tied putting the engine into gear ad it throttled up but the propeller was turning at a very slow speed (40-60 rpm). So I took it into a marine mechanic an they said the ball gears on the stern drive and drive shaft were extremely worn, likely due to the previous owner operating it with out the stern drive being all the way down. They said they could replace those but if more parts were needed internally it could become a big bill. They said that if I wanted play it safe, that I should get I re built. To do that would have to ship it from Here (Canadian Arctic) to Ontario. So after crunching the numbers, I decide to do the work myself. I removed the stern drive and the ball gears are extremely worn. I started the motor and the ball gear on the drive shaft seemed to turn just fine. I engaged the lower foot with the shifter cable and that ballgear turned fine when I turned the prop. I removed the upper gear case from the lower gear case and saw no sign of wear or corrosion.
Is there anything else I should look at before ordering parts? I there a potential for some piece that may be worn on no engage when it is under load? right now all I can figure is that it s the ball gear.
Thoughts?
