I'm taking off the lower u

I'm taking off the lower unit off of a OMC 400 sterndrive (1978). I'm having trouble disconnecting the shift cable. Any suggestions?

"Shift cable has be be disconnected from the bracket inside the boat, then pulled out through the transom.
Be careful when pulling out, expensive to replace!!!"
