"I am currently restoring a 72

"I am currently restoring a 72 Grady White Chesapeake 212. The motor is a chevy inline 6 cylinder, with a omc outdrive. My question is do the make conversion kits to update to a more dependable drive, while keeping the same engine? I like the simplicity of the motor, but i have heard alot of horror stories about omc outdrives. Plus this one has sat up maybe 10 years. If they do make these conversions, where could I start looking? Thanks"

I heard some rumbling

David.
I heard some rumbling about someone making a kit of some kind a few years ago but I've never heard anything else. It's a shame because there are a lot of nice boats going to the dump because of the cost of those old drives.
I guess check around on the net.

"If You are 'restoring&#39

"If You are 'restoring' the boat not to forget the engine, why change the drive? If it is not frozen and corrosion dammaged, change the bearings and seals. Has it been working for 30+ years, can You get one that lasts longer? The only main problem may be if You have tru-corse steering and getting cable/steering replacement.
There is no drive with a smoother shift and better maneuvering at the market today. Either restore all, or change the whole engine-drive package! I would be more worried about the engine!"

"It has the thru-transom steer

"It has the thru-transom steering cable, have already checked for a replacement, and they can be found, but are very limited. Your right about the drive, the people i have talked to love them, while they run, but when problems happen look out. If you can still get parts, i will keep her as is. Where is the best place to look for these hard to find items on these engines and drives?"

"Parts seems to be around acco

"Parts seems to be around according to other people here on the board. I'm not too familiar to the US marked, a bit too far away! However as I mentioned, if You are up to it, give the drive a good 'workover', not only seals but bearings as well. Bearings are standard, just read off the marking at inner and outer races. Seal kit I belive You may get from this site as well as impeller housing and impeller Do not forget to find a manual! A spare spring, sleeve and coil for the lower housing may be handy to have as well."
