I'm new. I have a1985 115hp johnson and with spark plugs removed while rotating flywheel I get binding and a scrubbing noise, can't tell where noise is coming from.

We can't tell either. Does it run? If it is out of the water, it might be the water pump impeller (dry). Needless to say, don't run it dry.

Has new water pump. I never run one dry. Ran fine until the day I was cranking it on water hose. It flooded and I took spark plugs out and spun motor over to clear cylinders. It won't crank now.

What do you mean by "won't crank" ?? No turn over or no start ??

I think you're right about it being the impeller I'm hearing. I stopped trying to crank it when I heard the noise. I probably wet fouled the plugs. What I don't know about this stuff would fill a library, but I want to learn.

I think I flooded it. It cranks and runs fine just easy to fluid when it has set up for awhile.

What's the compression on it seeing it's easy to flood ??

I haven't checked compression yet, holidays are my excuse,got a lot of grandbabies.I do have a question. What's the normal operating temp. for a 1978 85 johnson

I meant to get back to you on compression on the 115 . They are105 110. 120 125

Watson... Crank = Flywheel rotates via either electric or manual starter. Does not pertain to starting/running.
