Older Mercury 7.5HP o ring question

Got an older Merc 7.5. Had the plastic o ring between the powerhead and case melt closed. Have the new revised one but it seems to not sit down low enough. Ill try and post some pictures. Should I shorten the copper tube a little or should I open the hole up in the washer so it fits around the copper tube, or just put it together and crush it into place which doesn't seem right.

The factory replacement is a cup shape already.------If you have a factory part then just put the gasket on and put powerhead in place.----No need to cut anything.

Ill have to when I get home later. But the other side of the washer looks like its counterbored to go around that tube. Thanks for the quick replies!

If it is counterbored and fits over the tube then just install the powerhead.
