older Johnson 25hp

Hi, newbie here. I have. A 25 Hp Johnson,it is a pull start. It has to long wires coming from engine, red and black. Are these wires to charge a battery or for an electric starter. I tried hooking them up to my trolling battery to see if it would charge it, does not appear to work.

Any help in figuring out what these wires do would be appreciated.

We need the model number of that engine.

Are those two wires small gauge wires or heavy gauge such as is normally attached to the battery of an electric start engine?

What are those two wires attached to on the engine?
 
We are completely in the dark without that model number. But it is pretty safe to say the wires are not factory, if they are smaller than battery cables. And if they are attached to certain things, you could destroy those "certain things" by connecting them to a battery. Don't be guessing like that.
