"Brad,
You could check Art DeKalb's "revitalization tips" for old outboards.

" Brad, Of course it is hard

" Brad, Of course it is hard to diagnose with out testing the motor. I suggest you down load my "Art's plan" - what to do to get that outboard you just found running. The gas tank and any filter needs to be clean, and free of old gas gum. The carb. needs to be disassembled cleaned - all passages blown or cleaned out. Motors that were left with gas in them and stores have gum and resin in the carb passages. GUNK Carb cleaner works well. Points need to be cleanned and polished, spark wirres checked and replaced if worn or leaky. New plugs are the safest. Cleaning them is possible if you have a sand blast cleaner for plugs. It would also behoove you to look at the water pump impeller and see that it is OK, and check the lower unit for no water and plenty of grease. Refill with Lubriplate 105 available from marinas. Good luck Art "
