hi i'm am new here. i went

hi i'm am new here. i went in my barn today and found an old 5 1/2hp johnson. i put it in a 50 gallon drum and wanted to see if it ran. it randomly popped until i realized that the spark wires were backwards. now this thing runs perfectly smooth. but only for about 10 seconds every time i prime it. i cleaned the carb thoroly and hooked the fuel and air lines up correctly. what do you think could be wrong? also how do you find out the year?

"You need to have the cap closed on the tank. It needs to build up pressure to push fuel to the carburetor. If it's running smoothly to start with, it is likely fuel related. I assume you are using the proper 2-line pressurized tank correct?
It does sound like you aren't building enough pressure up, or the carb is dirty somewhere.
To find the model year you need to look at the serial number. Johnson started with the CD10 and CD11 in 1954, then went up by one number each year after that (CD-12 for 1955, CD-13 for 1956...CD-17 for 1960).
Before you put this motor into regular service you should be sure to check the coils for cracks, points and condensers, and for sure replace the water pump impeller.
Good luck, that is a great little motor if you get it running correctly."

it seems everything is in work

it seems everything is in working condition. reverse and forward work. and also suirts water when running. yes i am using the 2-line pressurized tank. and the cap is closed. maybe where the air line plugs into the tank is clogged? i made sure the carb was cleaned. i used compressed air and all the holes were clean. i'll check tomorrow to see if its the tank.

I have a 2 stroke johnson 8hp

I have a 2 stroke johnson 8hp just need to no the corect fuel mix (oil Ratio)

Yes Glen Always post the full

Yes Glen Always post the full model details including year and model number. But in this instance unless you have a museum piece I think it will be 1984 or later in which case the mixture is 50:1

"i have a johnson electromatic

"i have a johnson electromatic 40 hp with electric shift, belt driven generator, electric choke, large gear case, it does not have through the hub exhaust.the provious owner (s) removed name plate. so i don't know what year or the model number or serial number. on the block near the head is a round metal piece with munber j2543391 can someone help me identify my outboard motor."

"To Christopher:
Mine is a 10

"To Christopher:
Mine is a 10HP, but the 5.5's of the same year look the same. If yours is white and red (not red and white), then it's a 1958. The 56-57's were red and white, then they went to a new style, all white for 1959.
I also have a 1958 7.5, which looks the same.
Although I have many old outboards, the one in the picture is the one I use almost all the time. It pushes a 14 ft aluminum boat great, and is extremely reliable."

where yours is red mine is whi

where yours is red mine is white. how much do you think these motors are worth? my step dad wants to sell it because we already have a good running evinrue.

"Yours would be a 1956 or 1957

"Yours would be a 1956 or 1957.
Unless the motor is in brand new condition, it's not really worth that much. It's best value would be to someone who needs a 5 1/2 horsepower engine to use. I have a 1956 Evinrude 5 1/2 that is a bit beat up and faded, but runs like brand new. To a collecter it would be worth $50 to $100, but to a fisherman it might be worth a couple hundred dollars. It might not be worth selling. Remember, as good as your Evinrude runs today, it may let you down sometime. If I go fishing anywhere I might be a more than a mile or so from the boat launch, I always bring a spare motor, just in case. I learned the hard way once."

yeah its probably better to ke

yeah its probably better to keep as a spare.the cover is faded but the motor is a shiny mettallic red. the motor has always been in my barn. well its time to get the boat registered and throw on the evinrue and attempt to catch some fish. thanks for your guy's opinions!
