Old poly fuel tanks

I am restoring an old 68 Glasspar Avalon boat that has a built in bow tank. One day I was curious and took off the filler cap and smelled the tank, and it smelled like soured kerosene only worse. the boat had sat for around 7 to 10 years with about 4 gallons of fuel nix in it. I siphoned the old fuel out and it looked like muddy water. I also noticed some brown flakes in the old fuel.
I once read that these old poly tanks can break down from modern ethanol fuels and am now wondering if this tank is safe. So should i clean it out and risk keeping it, or just get another tank?
It does not leak and seems to be solid but I have not removed it and inspected yet either. Also what would you guys suggest I use to clean it with? I was thinking about using some acetone and hex nuts, and just shaking it around for a few hours then flush it out with fresh gasoline.
Any advice would be welcome!

replace it...or if its not replaceable just cap the lines off and use portable tanks..it aint worth the hassle and the potential for contaminating an engine is too great...i been there and done that....just once though...
