"Good morning,

I have a 1974 Mercury 3 cylinder outboard.
Here is my problem: I need to get a replacement lower unit as mine is cracked pretty good on the upper port side. I have spotted one for sale but has a different gear case#.
My gearcase# is 1643-4930 (74')
Gearcase in question is from a 1971 650 case#1623-5886, but is off of a 4-cyl motor.
They look identical in a picture, are they maybe compatible?
Maybe other years/models will work?- The one I'm looking at seems a little pricy & will need seals.
Appreciate any thoughts or references anyone may have on this.

Thank you,
-Brian Quinn"

Brian:

This is your lucky day! I have a 74 triple LU (long shaft) that I just rebuilt (new seals and impeller) and pressure tested. $150 if you're interested.

Jeff

PS: The 4 cylinder LUs have different gear ratios.

"Hey that does sound like a hek of a deal fastjeff, I might take you up on that.
At the moment I am debating buying my neighbors old Marathon mark78 instead. The price is almost right & I would like the extra hp's. Last years tubing experience with the kids could have been more exiting. Will let you know if it doesn't work out for sure & thank you.
