a friend recently gave me a johnson motor he knew nothing about. i have the model R05-26r and the serial J2457046. i would like to know the year and hp rating of this motor. also an opinion of the value of repair/ ease of finding parts. it really doesnt look bad. the lower unit was fullof rust but looked pretty salvageable to me. shifter fork was toast. thank anybody for opinions.

"sounds like u have an evinrud

"sounds like u have an evinrude box,..your unit,is spring loaded, for 'fail safe' engagement in forward,..since u r getting rev,i would test the switch,...your unit, uses hydralic pressure, and solenoids,to chg position of clutch dog...take a test light, and ck the wires at engine, lower of pwrhd, going to LU,disc the knife connections,,in Neutral--u should have pwr to GREEN wire,in REV,which is working,u should have pwr to both wires, which u have....since it is actually, functioning,i would say bad switch....as an educated guess.."

"Because the gear case uses hy

"Because the gear case uses hydrolic presssure ie oil, if the oil is substandard - no hydrolics. I changed the oil and everything works well."

You should be using Type C oil
