Old Johnson electric starter replacement

Hello,

I have an old 33hp Johnson, without a electric starter, the motor runs very good, but it is real annoying to run between the steering wheel, to the motor, to pull it. I am located in Estonia, and nobody has to offer a electric starter to such a motor, and on ebay the starters are very expensive. Has anyone ever replaced the starter for example with a car starter or something else?

You need the proper starter and starter mounting bracket. It was used on a variety of years/models. Car starter??? I don't know what you would attempt in Estonia, but it certainly would not be a practical solution here. There are too many of the correct starters around.

Do you have the ring gear on the flywheel ?---------Any starter from a 1964 to 1974 model 2 cylinder Johnson / Evinrude will work.-------28 hp / 33 / hp and the 40 hp models.-----Not sure how many of these motors are still around where you are.---Lots of these starters available in my area.

The flywheel has the ring gear, i think, that it would not be a problem to make a custom made bracket. In my region is the situation with outboard starters 0, i have many ad`s in the Estonian portals, but nobody has to offer it. I had some offers, but the price was almost 200 euro. Also some people have talked, that the original starter is not a good piece, since it has only two bushings.

I'd think you could find a starter for like $50-$80.. Try searching Ebay using the part # of the starter. That is usually the ticket to finding the cheaper ones as they cover many years/models and you will not get so many hits searching for a single year. Just bought one for my V4 Johnson, was $60.

For me it is very expensive to order from ebay outboard parts, since most of them are located in the US and shipping costs from there to my country are very expensive, plus additional customs are included.

I got now two starters for the motor, for testing, both starters are too weak, they dont manage to rotate the motor while the plugs are on, it just seems that the starter is too weak. what could be the problem with them? I have also only one starter relay for them, it does not make no difference, if i use it or not, what is the work principle of the starter relay/solenoid? Could this cause the problem? The starter bushings look ok and the bushings are also looking pretty good
