"I have an old, (1971 I think), Johnson 6hp that I picked up at a yard sale. Model number is 6R-71E.

My question is this. Is there any way of adding a battery charging capability to this engine? Either an alternator or magneto type charger circuit?

Also, can anyone confirm this is a 1971 model engine?"

Charging systems were not available on those engines. I think the smallest engine with a charging system was the 9.5 HP.

Charging systems were first of

Charging systems were first offered on the 9.9hp in 74. Not available on the early 6hp.
