I have a friend who has an old inline six 140hp. Sorry I do not have a model or serial number right now.

Here is what I know.

The engine will not start with the key. With the key in the on position, the engine will run when a jumper cable is used to the starter post.

The solenoid does make noise when you turn the key to the start position, however the starter does not receive any electricity from the solenoid.

So, is this a bad solenoid or is this a bad neutral safety switch??????

Thanks, Mark

Not the nuetral switch !!---------------Bad solenoid or bad starter.---------------------Those starters are easy to inspect repair.-----------Just take it apart ( 2 bolts ) and post what you find.

How can the starter be bad if it starts with a jumper cable? If it is not the neutral switch, it must be the solenoid.

Question ; There are four wires on the solenoid, 1 battery, 2 starter, 3. hot from ignition switch, and 4. ????????

Mark

# 4 would be a ground.---------------# 3 is from battery( via the ignition switch ) to the solenoid coil ( electromagnet ) and from there to post # 4 then to the wee wire and to ground !!---------------If it clicks then the nuetral switch is good !!------------If it won,t crank then the solenoid is " bad " !!
