"To add to Bandit's comments, yes, your 115 is brake horsepower (which would equate to approx 110 shaft horsepower under current measuring methods).

However, before the EPA got their fingers into things, Merc used to significantly (under market) the horsepower of their motors to make them look great compared to the competition, often times under rating them by as much as 10%, so your 115 could have been putting out as much as 125 at the crank (125 BHP) which would be the equivalent of a modern 120 horse engine.

Today most motors are within 4% of advertised horsepower, so a modern 115 would be (perfectly tuned in the factory) anywhere between 110-120 horses.

So for all my babling, your old 115 potentially puts out about as much as a current 115 - max about 120 horses...

I believe it was Merc's 1986 model year motors that were rated in Shaft Horsepower (SHP), so an 86-94 model would put out more power than the tigher controlled modern models..."
