old 318 questions

I have an older (1968) Houseboat that is in bad need of engine repairs. We took the engine out . . . (it had been overheating . . . water in the oil). The engine had these problems when i bought the boat so there were no surprises. Anyway, after getting the engine out and doing a lot of research we find that it is: a 1962-67 318M (it has a Dana outdrive). with the Ramhorn style exaust manifolds (one is cracked). Having a very difficut time finding a replacement (rebuild block). here are some questions: Why would this motor have a clutch (which it did)? Can a 1968 - up 318 be used to replace this engine and my parts off the other engine fit (i think the timing chain cover/water pump will)? Has anyone every faced these problems and any advice?

Your best bet is to replace the old M318 with a LM318.. the exhaust manifolds are almost impossible to get and with a LM318 we can get you almost anything you need for it. The bellhousing is the same and it will bolt right up.. you would want to look at the flywheel but I think it is a direct bolt up also ( would want to look at the pattern on the crank but I am pretty sure it is the same.) Back when I was a kid this was a popular swap for us as we would start with a 62-65 Plymouth / Dodge and replace the Poly 318 with a 340.. If you need any help let me know this sounds like a fun project!

Agreed, but I'd look for a relatively similar 360 instead. A single engined houseboat needs all the nelp it can get!
