Got the boat in the water 2 times so far , but I have a problem of some sort ? in the backyard with the ears on , touch the key and it starts instantly ! put it in the water and cranks and cranks and cranks ! take it out of the water and it starts ? put it back in the water , starts right up and runs great ? other than not a lot of rpm ? do these engines have a rev limiter ? am I missing something ??? I installed a new water pump , new plugs "champion" , mistake , fouled out in 10 minutes ! installed new plugs , NGK , runs much better !!! sorry this is my 1st boat ! thanks in advance !

Ok , I borrowed a compression tester from autozone , #1-108 , #2-107 , #3-114 , #4-100,I found I was getting no fire on #1 and #3 I pulled the flywheel and the 2 black ,I assume "pickup coils " are leaking some sort of resin ???? one in the back just a little , one in front more than should fit in it !!! are these replaceable , or do I need the whole I guess "stator" ??? or am I barking up the wrong tree ???

Leaking goo is a purty good indication of a bad stator. Just replaced mine due to the same problem.

Yes you need to replace the entire stator.

Might pay to swap the coils around'n see if the no spark issue moves to a different cylinder. But a leaking stator is a bad sign.

I believe that motor has a single powerpack. Don't think it was rev limited. The CDI replacement is not.

Well, me being me , I took it out , took the 2 leaking coils off , checked everything for continuity . put it back together , epoxied everything , noticed the two "triggers" ? and the rotten paper shims separating them from the housing , replaced them with "high tech" plastic I found on the ground . put it all back together , started it . still no spark on 1&3 , decided to check for voltage from the "triggers" 1&3 nothing , as soon as I checked #1 , 1&3 started firing ??????? now I have decent fire to all 4 . It idles good , you bring up the rpm and it starts missing like it is out of time ? back down , idles fine ! bad powerpack ??????

Your problem is probly the stator. But fyi I might have one'a them powerpacks buried around here somewhere. Believe it's a CDI.

Where you at?

(Engine Won't Start or Hard Starting In Water)
(Joe Reeves)

The Evinrude and Johnson engines, starting in 1973, have what is called Magneto Capacitance Discharge ignition, self contained, not dependent on battery voltage. The engine must turn over at least 300 rpms in order for the flywheel magnets rotating past the stator ignition generating coils to supply approximately 300v AC to the powerpack(s), which in turn is needed to supply power to the coils etc etc (spark).

In the water, exhaust back pressure is encountered due to the fact that the exhaust housing (housing between the powerhead and the lower unit) is filled with water. This would drag down the needed rpms, affecting ignition.

Normally the clue to this type problem is that the engine starts fine on a flushette (hose), but is very difficult to start when in the water.

Should this be the case, check the battery, clean and tighten all conections (use a wrench or pliers, not your fingers). Any cable that gets overly warm or hot indicates either a loose, or tight but dirty, or internally corroded cable. And of course check the starter itself.

Starter Test: With a top notch fully charged battery and known good jumper cables, connect the cables directly to the electric starter. If the starter cranks faster than usual, you have a loose or dirty cable connection somewhere. If the starter continues to crank slow, then obviously the starter needs looking at.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

I took it out tonight , about 2 miles up the lake , went back to 2 cylinders ! I guess i'll have to shop around and find a parts motor , can't afford new stuff ! or old really ,LOL !! will the stator and power pack on a similar johnson 115 fit ?????

I found a 115 johnson , don't know the year . I see no power pack , where mine is , and the coils are mounted on the heads . I have no idea on the year ? said it ran but had a bad piston and no lower unit .

The powerhead must look identical... pack where yours is etc etc. 1973 to 1977 will fit.

When in doubt, get the model number to us.

Do not purchase the one you just described above!

Seahorse means nothing except that it is a Johnson outboard... the model number pinpoints exactly what it is... year, make, hp, etc.

Just started it on the ears , still missing , 1 minute in , other 2 cylinders come to life and it runs fine ! could it be a bad ground or something ?
