"1988 454s, after running for a time and then slowing back to idle we often get an "oily" type smell. Is that normal or any idea what might be causing it? Dissipates as soon as turn blowers back on."

Jeff how do I know if PCV is working properly or not? What to look for? Thanks

"I don't believe the '

"I don't believe the '88 454 have a positive crankcase ventilation system. That implies a vacuum based method of scavenging the crankcase. These engines use a very simple, two hoses routed from the valve covers to the outside of the flame arrestor approach. But, yes, do check the integrety of the hoses, especially at the ends."

"ALL marine engines need some

"ALL marine engines need some kind of positive crankcase ventilation.

Look for a vacuum hose going from the carb/ intake to a valve cover. If there's a doo-flingy in that line, that's the PCV valve. If it rattles after you remove it, it's probably okay. If not, replace it.

"My vintage 89 Crusader 454s have the setup described by diver dave. No PVC valve, just a hose from each valve cover to the flame arrester.

"What you have is acting like

"What you have is acting like a ventilation system, and not very effectively compared to a true PCV system (that FORCES airflow through the motor). Your system merely captures fumes coming out, with no fresh, flushing air being drawn through the motor.

Still, if it came from the factory that way...

"Yep have what diverdave descr

"Yep have what diverdave described. Hoses are pretty bad shape, cn just replace with regular engine hose of this size?"

"If you use generic heater hos

"If you use generic heater hose, it will last a few years and then the residue will start to deteriorate it. If you want it to last a long time, you can spend a little more and buy fuel line or PCV hose - it's a bit stiffer and is made with a better grade of rubber.

BTW same setup - '86 vintage BBCs"

"I'm running 5/8" heat

"I'm running 5/8" heater hose. About 7 years old and getting pretty soft. Not the most critical hose application in the world, at least..."

Me too....But it is new heater

Me too....But it is new heater hose as of last season. I had been looking for some kind of PCV setup on our blocks but never did find them (1992)

PCV valves were added to autom

PCV valves were added to automobiles in 1963 and helped oil to stay cleaner and increased engine life. I have added PCV valves to two of my early 60's automobiles with good results. I don't see why they could not be easily added to boats with good results. There cause a slight leaning of the fuel mixture but this was hardly noticeable and perhaps added to fuel mileage.

"Wikipedia has a very nice write up on the PCV history. Invented for TANKS to allow deep water fording! Then, onto cars to reduce emissions and the dark stripe in the middle of the lanes (really!).
I've found my 454's to be very clean inside, due to higher oil temps (driving out water vapor) and the 50 hour oil change interval, despite not using PCV."
