Have a 1947-49 Mercury 10 hp been mixing 3oz to 1 gal. Does this seem right for this old engine?

" Mr. Nolan,
That's a litte on the lean side, being a tad richer than 50:1. Those old Mercs have a bronze center main that likes to have a little extra oil, along about the 24:1 level, which works out to a pint of oil to 3 gallons of gas...
Love them old Mercs! I've got one of pretty much every model made from '46 to '56...

For those of you that have pre 50's Mercurys and wonder why they may not be running up to par in static test situations I have learned that with the lower shoud off there is a tendency for the intake to suck in rich exhaust fumes that form around the engine. This causes all kinds of trouble. Put a fan in front of you engine and your problems are solved. I learned this the hard way after cleaning cards and replacing every electrical componet on the engine. Of course on a moving boat this doesn't happen.
