Oil tank sensor

The attached pictures are from a 1994 16.6 Princecraft with 70 HP Johnson 2 stroke, oil tank pick up/sensor. This sensor seems to be faulty. When I do a continuity test I get a closed circuit. As you can see I took the unit out of the tank but don't quite know how it works. Does anyone have any insight on this unit?

If it is the orginal '94 sender it is junk. Prior to '96 they had electronics in them and were giving off false signals all the time. Find a sender from '96 and up and install that. All they had was an on/off switch for low oil and no electronics.

I found a used one,do the 96 and up look the same as the 94, just different inside,if not how do I tell if it is the better one.

I believe the '95 and prior had a brown and black wire coming out of them. The '96 and later had a black wire and a brown wire with a black tracer.
