..... and oil seal behind it needs replacing too.
The old one was installed with the 'open' side facing in and the flat side facing out,
but pictures on parts pages show it the other way round - flat side facing in and 'open' side facing out.
Anthomny, let's define
in and
out in terms of
FWD and
AFT.
Port/Stbd/FWD/AFT...... this makes dicussing marine items much easier.
There are two scenarios, each different, pertaining to single lip/spring tension grease seals.
One.... if the grease seal is to prevent grease from escaping the bearing cavity, then the seal lip would face the bearing (AFT in this case) ....... (such as Volvo Penta's FWD-most PDS bearing seal.... and/or an inner wheel bearing spindle lip seal, which faces outward)
Two... if the grease seal is to prevent incoming dust/dirt/debris
ONLY....,
yet not be required to retain the grease, then the seal lip would face away from the bearing (FWD in this case) ..... (very much oposite from an inner wheel bearing spindle lip seal)
In the case of your Merc Gimbal Bearing lip seal, and Gimbal bearing position...... and with the seal being installed
first (FWD of the bearing), the lip side would face AFT and towards the bearing.... it would
NOT face FWD towards the engine.
IOW, the seal lip would face AFT towards the bearing, and would be installed "as per shown" on the drawing titled "Gimbal Housing Components". (I'm sure that this is shown as such for good reason)
Simply put..... this is a dry area. This seal is not preventing water intrusion...... it's job is to retain the grease within the housing only....... nothing more.
FYI.... lube your Gimbal Bearing with the engine running at idle. Dynamic -vs- Static!
