oil recomendation for 440

old hatt

Recently purchased boat with twin 440's. Never had a Chrysler marine engine before and am wondering what weight oil folks on this site would recommend. Thanks

I use 10w30 which is good for a cool climate but if I was in Florida I might consider going to 10w40 or even 20w50. Seems someone mentioned diesel engine oil is good too because of the extra additives help the older gas engines without the rollers on the lifters.

Pretty much everybody I know has been using Delo 400 15W40 for years in both gas and diesels. Costco and walmart have it cheap in the gallon jugs.

eero_karppa is right on. Any oil with the 'energy star' symbol on the bottle is designed with
low levels of zinc (among other things) because roller cam'd engines don't need it but your engine does.

Diesel oils have as much as you can get next to some racing oils but much cheaper.

I personally stay away from the full synthetic oils for these older engines too.

Shell Rotella diesel oil seems to be the best bet for now. Lucas sells a ZDDP additive in a quart bottle (good for two motors) if you want to go that way.
