Oil Pressure Sender Issue

"Twin 454s (1998). This weekend I was on the bay (Chesapeake) on a good run pulling into an anchorage when the port engine oil pressure dropped off the scale (pegged below zero;like a short). The low oil pressure alarm did not sound which lead me to believe it was a false reading.

I do not believe it is the gauge (connected stbd engine sender wire and read fine). After taking calculated risks (monitoring engine temp, oil cooler input temp, oil cooler output temp, sounds) we took off the next morning. After hitting a small wake, the meter started to read again. Though it varied wildly from its normal reading it continued to read. Could the sender unit be going south and is the actual alarm tied to a different sensor?

"The alarm is a switch - separate from the sender unit. The oil pressure switch is the one driving the alarm when the key is ON but the engine NOT running.

I'd bet on a bad electrical connection. You can test the gauge with resistors if you're worried about its "accuracy". Try shaking the harness/wires, especially around the connectors. Green or rusted connectors at the gauge are good candiates to replace, too."

Do yourself a HUGE favor and test the oil pressure with a mechanical gage. Then replace hte sneder. They do go bad..

I am on my third oil pressure

I am on my third oil pressure sender on my 2007 8.1L Crusader. It's potentiometer that sends it's signal to the ECM and the oil pressure signal to the gauge comes from the ECM. It will also generate a buzzer alarm when it fails. It rattled me the first time but I didn't hear any valve train noise that would be common with a non roller cam type and I don't know what it the roller cam engine would sound like with low oil pressure.

I went out and bought a cheap gauge (less than $10) and verified my pressure. After the second one failed I bought a sender from someone else thru the internet. The unit seems to be unique to the Crusader engine. It's still working but I keep the cheap gauge in the boat to plug in just in case.

"Do you have a recommendation for the mechanical gauge? I assume it would go in the same location as the sender unit however temporary.

Either way, it will be fun (not) to change. It's wedged between the engine and the gas tank under the exhaust manifold.

"You can "Tee" in a common automotive gage (from an auto store; it comes in a kit with fittings and nylon tubing).

Good luck, and pack lots of asprins!
