Oil Plug Screw- fell out

Hello- I recently purchased a Forester 1700 classic-with a 90HP Mercury Force. I took it out on the water this past weekend, ran fine the first day out, second day the motor ran a bit rougher. The motor never died-when I got home, I see the top oil screw on the lower unit is missing. I'm sure it took in water. I'm a relatively new boat owner, what is my best route to figure out what I should be looking for, as far as damage to the motor. Thank you for any help.

My apologies, this is for a 1996 90HP Mercury Force

remove lower screw, drain oil,if milky, water has gotten into lower unit, look for metal shavings, chunks of metal present?time for disassembly and inspection of gears etc.

You might luck out. Flush the LU from the top with kerosene (use a small funnel with a hose at the bottom) until it comes out clear. (Raise the motor high up a few times to get the gook out the top.) Let drain overnight, then refill with gear oil, fire her up, and pray!

Those gears are tougher than most people think.

Heck, I wouldn't worry about it if you just ran it once. I ran a 90 HP rude rusted thru the lower for months. When i pulled the boat out of the wet slip to find out why it was getting harder to shift and check other things i pulled the drain plug and pure salt water poured out of the lower, after closer inspection electrolisis had eaten away thru the casing.
