Oil level

"Just discovered I have the wrong dipstick (I think)
Boat is an unfinished project I inherited

Topped up the oil in my 440 to the level on the dipstick and it started running really rough and would`nt rev.
After a bit of head scratching I checked the oil again and it was like cream.
I thought I had a head gasket or water
jacket problem but no water was missing, no back pressure in the oil filler or header tank.
I bought a vacuum oil remover and pulled nearly 15 litres of creamy oil out ?????
I replaced the oil again to the level and same again.
Finally something clicked and I looked up the
oil quantity which is supposed to be 6 quarts plus 1 for the filter assuming this is US quarts and a little less than the uk equivalent that is appx 6 litres of oil. not nearly 15 as my dipstick would have me beleive
Can any one confirm this for me, and can any one tell me how long the dipstick sould be from the stop to the upper and lower levels I need to make one unless I can buy one.

Thanks

Tony"

Hi Russell
No its a single 7.

Hi Russell
No its a single 7.4 litre M440
I was told when I bought the boat it had just had an oil change so I topped it up to the level on the dip stick. So yes it did have more than 15 qts.

"Thinking out loud.. "I checked the oil again and it was like cream." Even WAY over filled like this seems to be, would the oil turn creamy? I thought water was the only thing that cause water to do that."

"If the oil level gets too hig

"If the oil level gets too high, it reaches the crankshaft. The crankshaft then starts to whip it into a froth, which can make it look 'creamy'. Also, when this froth makes it to the hydraulic lifters, they don't work well, they start to make clacking noises, and in extreme cases, the valves don't open like they should, causing rough running."

"Yep clacking rough running Ha

"Yep clacking rough running Had the lot, it seems to have settled down now. hopefully it has lived.
Still no water loss either fingers crossed.
I think it will take another oil change to remove the full fat oil residue, I dont want to flush the engine as its done such low hours."
