Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson, 70's early 80s

I have a 18hp older pry 70's early 80s model. Recently noticed that when i stop the back of the boat has oil spots all over. The oil or gas that is leaking is dripping from a drain hole in the bottom of the powerhead case. The when the oil is touched it seems to be a whitish color and greasy and smells like gas. Any probable causes of this or is it norm to leak some.

Re: Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson

Absolutely normal--------------------------Have the gearcase pressure tested if you are worried.----------------Gearcase seal failures can be expensive and if it has not been done ( resealed ) recently do it , it can be " peace of mind " for years to come.

Re: Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson

Thank you for the quick reply. I will look into the gearcase pressure test. Would it be a bad idea to rinse out the bottom of the powerhead case? The only reason i ask is i do not really like the oil slicks that linger behind the boat when we stop.

Re: Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson

The oil slick will not go away!----------You might want to check the fuel pump and carburetor for leaks.-----------------You might try different oils to see if the " eyesore " can be reduced.

Re: Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson

Are you running a 50 to 1 gas/fuel ratio(2.7 ounces per gallon or one pint in 6 gallons) ?

Re: Oil leaking on 18hp Johnson

If oil is spraying all over the back of your boat, I'd say that sounds like a problem.
