Oil Leak

My 1988 6HP has an oil leak out of a very small square hole at the lower unit joint. There is one of these on each side of the lower unit joint. What could cause this? I just bought this motor.

Could be normal for a 2 stroke motor.----Any water iin the gear oil ?----Pressure test the gearcase.----Install a new water pump impeller now.

What purpose would the little square holes serve? No water in the oil.

They drain water out of exhaust housing so no damage from freezing.

Thanks for the info. Not having any manual, I think this forum's knowledge will help me out a lot.
